Bike tours

Our tips for easier and demanding bike tours on Melchsee-Frutt and surroundings.

Four Lakes Bike Tour
The Four Lakes Bike Tour Melchsee-Frutt – Tannalp – Engstlenalp – Jochpass – Trübsee – Engelberg takes you through one of the most beautiful areas of Central Switzerland. You start in Stöckalp and take the cable car to Melchsee-Frutt. Once at the top, hop on your bike and enjoy the ride via Tannalp to Engstlenalp. Then it’s up to the Jochpass. There the Jochpass trail awaits you downhill via Trübsee to Engelberg.

ATTENTION: There is a danger of falling at the Geisstritt section! You are not allowed to ride your bike on this trail and must push your bike (follow the signposts).

Longest single trail in Switzerland
The bike tour from Melchsee-Frutt to Hasliberg and on to Giswil should include the longest single trail in Switzerland.
Ideally, the tour starts in Sarnen with the postbus journey to Stöckalp and the ascent with the gondola lift to Frutt. Passing the two lakes, you then climb up to the Balmeggerhorn and then tackle the high-level trail through the extremely steep terrain to Planplatten – with the Titlis and Trift glaciers in sight. The route then continues via Hääggen to Käserstatt and finally on to Gibel. Now the Rosenlaui Glacier, Wetterhorn and Eiger are within reach. The long singletrail descent to Lungern is quite rough at times. From Lungern, the route leads via Kaiserstuhl to Giswil, with only short sections on the main road. The return journey to Sarnen is either by train or along the main road.

NOTE: The path from Erzegg to Planplatten is also frequently used by hikers. The path runs through very steep terrain. It is not possible to overtake hikers. Mountain bikers are therefore expected to show particularly considerate behaviour. The trail should also be avoided at weekends.

ATTENTION: Very steep terrain in places! The route is easier to cycle on an e-bike. You have to push the bike in places (follow the signs).
