The Melchsee is at the centre of Melchsee-Frutt, to which it lends its name. Nearly 2,000 metres above sea level, it is dammed by an articifial embankment. The Hugschwendi power plant, operated by the Elektrizitätswerk Obwalden (EWO), produces electricity.
